Manos Del Uruguay was set up in 1968 as a
non profit organisation, to create job oportunities
for women in the country, especially in rural areas.
In many cases this is the only source of family income
and provides much needed local work for women,
allowing them to live and work in their communities
instead of moving to Montevideo.
'Manos' is dedicated to providing support and training
to it's members and its ownership belongs to the craftswomen
joined in 17 co-operatives.
At present it is made up of 350 member craftswomen,
although that number triples during the export season.
Recently 'Manos' was granted
'Fair Trade Status' -the only yarn company
with official recognition.
Every skein of Manos yarn has a label attached
which details where the yarn has been dyed
and by which artisan.
Manos Silk Blend
Manos silk is a luxurious blend of merino and silk
and comes in a range of vibrant colours ,
both variegated and plain.
Manos Lace
Manos Lace is a blend of three luxurious fibres
-Baby Alpaca, Silk and Cashmere.
Manos Silk and Manos Lace knit up beautifully,
with a gorgeous drape and can be seen in many pieces
of my work on this website and my other website
Manos Wool Classica
Manos wool is handspun pure wool which can be used
for felting projects.
All these yarns are hand dyed in large kettles
over wood fires, to create a subtle marbelised
effect and no two skeins are exactly alike.
I do have Manos Lace and Manos Wool in stock,
although they have not yet been added to the website,
but do e mail me if you would like to order these.
